Homemade Lotion Recipe for Dry, Cracked Feet

Summer is the worst time for dry, cracked feet, at least for me anyway. I have to sit down with a pumice stone every night before bed just to smooth out the skin on the balls of my feet, and afterward my thirsty, tired dogs need a drink.

A couple of years ago, when my mom and I were in the natural, homemade products business, we decided it was high time to do away with the cracked feet of summer, and since neither of us was hanging out on the beach in our bare feet every day, whipping up a lotion seemed like a good solution.

We called it Taliesin’s Tired Feet Cream–named for the Celtic bard, Taliesin. Since we spent most of our summer setting up shop at renaissance faires, it went over really well with the wandering bards and minstrels, who then passed on the word to the maidens. Before the end of summer, even the Kings and Queens were begging to sample our wares.

Whether you’re a wandering bard, or simply someone who wants to sooth their tired dogs after a long day, this simple, homemade lotion is a must make!

You will need:

  • 1/4 cup of shaved cocoa butter
  • 1 tbsp of coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp of jojoba oil
  • 15 drops of peppermint oil
  • 10 drops of orange oil
  • 5-7 drops of tea tree oil
  • 2 tbsp of beeswax
  • 1/8 cup distilled water
  • Double boiler
  • Hand blender or wire whisk
  • Recycled container for storage

Fill the bottom of your double boiler with tap water on medium-low heat. Add the cocoa butter and beeswax to the pan and allow it to slowly melt. Add in your oils and stir together. Remove from heat once all the ingredients are melted together and pour in your distilled water.

Whisk or blend until you have a smooth, creamy consistency, then transfer to your container and allow it to cool down. Store this in the refrigerator for an extra cool sensation after a long day. The peppermint and tea tree oil are both relieving and healing, and will help repair your dry skin.

Even if you don’t feel lotion savvy, you can always add the peppermint, orange and tea tree oils to your favorite, scent-free, over the counter lotion to achieve the same healing coolness.

Your feet will never feel the same again, and after a long, hot day you’ll be looking forward to getting home and slathering this cooling lotion all over your feet.
